North Carolina's Digital Vehicle Registration Now in Effect
North Carolina's transition to digital vehicle registration took effect October 1st, eliminating printed registration cards and license plate stickers under Senate Bill 257.
For dealerships, limited registration plate stickers and registration cards for online dealers are no longer being issued. Dealers will continue to process title work and work with License Plate Agencies. Online dealers will receive training through their registration vendor to help with the transition.
For customers, the renewal process remains largely the same. Renewal notices will continue to be sent, and customers can renew online, in person, by mail or at a kiosk. After renewing, they'll receive a digital registration that can be downloaded online or sent by email. Customers who want a printed copy can download and print a free PDF or request a printed copy for a $5 fee.
NCADA sent a detailed Dealer Alert to members covering what customers and dealers can expect, examples of the new registration documents and training information for online dealers.
NCADA previously published an overview of the transition to digital vehicle registration ahead of the October 1st implementation. NCADA will continue to share updates as additional information becomes available from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.
