DMV Announces New Temporary Markers

New 30-Day Temporary Marker Format

The Division of Motor Vehicles is beginning the rollout of a new format for the North Carolina 30-Day temporary marker.  The new marker is designed to enhance security and the ability of law enforcement agencies in the state to identify expired markers.  The new format will require the full expiration date (month, date, and year) to be written in large permanent RED ink in the middle of the tag.  Other information normally included on the current temporary marker will continue to be written on tag.  A copy of a memo from DMV to all North Carolina dealers is included below.

Important Note - While DMV is beginning to rollout the new markers this week, dealers may continue to issue the old style markers they currently have and will not receive the revised format markers until the next time additional markers are ordered.  Until all the old markers are depleted both the old and new style markers may be displayed on vehicles.

New Temporary Marker Sample

Instructions

The new temporary marker moves the vehicle information (make, year, VIN, etc.) to a new box near the top center of the tag.  Dealers should fill-in the appropriate boxes for the vehicle with the following information (See above sample):

MAKE - Full manufacturer’s name
YEAR - Four (4) digit model year
VIN - Complete VIN
ISSUE - Full issue date of the temporary marker (e.g., 02-09-10) (Single digits using a zero)
DEALER NAME - Full dealer name
ADDRESS - Dealer physical address location
EXPIRATION DATE - The numbers in the expiration date blocks should be written as large as possible and fit within the blocks and be in permanent RED ink.  According to the DMV memo noted above, the numbers should be at least 3/4” high and 3/4” wide and 3/8” thick.  DMV suggests a standard red “marks-a-lot” pen can be used.  The spaces in the expiration date blocks should be filled-in as follows:

MONTH block - Two (2) digit designation for the month with single digit months using a zero (e.g., March - 03 and October - 10).
DAY block - Day number with single digit numbers using a zero (e.g., 09 for the ninth day of the month).
YEAR block - Two (2) digit form for the year (e.g., 10 for 2010).
